Dr. Smith is very proficient in performing Minimally Invasive surgery. Many Gynecologic procedures that were once done through large, open surgical incisions can now be done using the Laparoscope through small incisions called ports. This is referred to as Minimally Invasive Surgery. In comparison to open surgery, there is usually less pain and trauma to the patient, faster recovery and shorter time loss from work. The surgery is done using long rigid instruments through small ports while looking at a video monitor. The surgeon, of course, must have training in advanced Laparoscopic procedures and good hand-eye coordination. The types of procedures that may be done through the Laparoscope include treatment for ectopic pregnancies, removal of ovarian cysts or the ovaries themselves, removal of fibroids (myomectomies), lysis of adhesions and Hysterectomies. Of course, not all patients are good candidates for Minimally Invasive surgery. If you require surgery, Dr. Smith will talk with you about all of your options and let you know if you are a good candidate to have your procedure done Laparoscopically.
